personal folders and home directory are on corporate share drives and I need to re-establish the connectivity to the share before starting Outlook. Due to the
captive portal, the VPN connection cannot be established after logging in so
Windows never re-establishes the connections to the shares.

Additional Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Client Access Licenses (CALs) will allow the application server(s) to provide for simultaneous use of the products. This white paper identifies the memory and core (CPU) sizing for the RDS servers to satisfy the user requirements for using these products on application servers.
Next, take the label cut from the container and lay it on the mosquito netting and cut the mosquito netting about 1/2 inch larger than the plastic label. This is cur wider so it will overlap the glue and adhere to the container.
Take the sand paper and rough up the area on the inside around the area that was cut out. This will help the glue adhere to the plastic. Now, take the glue or glue gun and put a bead of glue on the inside of the container around the opening. Lay the mosquito mesh over the glue and use cardboard or the plastic label cut out to press the mosquito mesh into the glue. Before the glue dries you can adjust the mesh to remove wrinkles. To keep the container from rolling, I found it helps to place it on the lid.
There you go! You now have a bug box. Let the container and mesh sit per the drying duration on the glue used. After the glue dries, kids can use the container for bugs, fireflies, frogs, or I suppose small snakes.
Having flat wide feet can greatly limit a person's shoe selection. The show needs to be available in wide widths, with a removable insole, and comfortably accommodates orthotics. These requirements can reduce the limitless shoe selection down to only a few brands. I have had insole orthotics since my 7th grade running days and until December 2016, have had to suffer with finding shoes that fit both my wide foot and orthotics. I've had custom orthotics made for $300-$500 a pair and results are not always great. One pair was supportive but I was never able to find a shoe that comfortably accepted the orthotics and my feet. My current custom orthotics require replacement and while I have tried OTC orthotics over the years, I have not had any luck until I found orthotics from Samurai Insoles.
Plain and simple, these insoles are wonderful only $40!

If purchasing Samurai Insoles on Amazon, you will receive an email with tips. I recommend reading the tips and following the tips based on your situation. The tips are:

TIP #1: We recommend a new(ish) pair of quality, well fitting sneakers, boots, or clogs to go with your Samurai Insoles. If they have a manufacturer's insole that can be removed and replaced with our insoles, even better!

TIP #2: Simply remove the manufacturer's insoles from your shoe, and replace them with your new pair of Samurai Insoles.

TIP #3: Samurai Insoles are designed to fit in your shoes without any trimming necessary. But hey, there's LOTS of different sizes and shapes of shoes out there! So, if your insoles have an uncomfortable amount of excess material at the toes trim a small amount of material away from the front of the insole only.

TIP #4: You'll notice a rim where the padded case has been vacuum sealed to our unique orthotic shell in the heel area. Yes, this should be there! As part our unique design, the material around the orthotic shell is simply to anchor the insole to your shoe. You should not feel the vacuum sealed rim during use. If you do, please let us know.

TIP #5 (LAST, BUT MOST IMPORTANT): We recommend becoming accustomed to your Samurai Insoles over the course of 7-14 days. Start off by wearing your Samurai insoles about an hour the first time, then replace them with your shoe manufacturer's original insoles. Repeat this process every day, adding an additional hour of use with each successive day, until you reach 8 consecutive hours of use. If your feet become fatigued while wearing Samurai Insoles, remove them at that point, and wear them the following day for the same time period, increasing the amount of time worn by an hour each successive day.

If you are searching for OTC insoles, I highly recommend the Samurai Insoles. Check them out on Amazon.

I had the opportunity to take the CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst beta certification exam (CompTIA CSA+) beta certification exam. This intended to be a new certification that is a vendor neutral certification path between CompTIA's Security+ and the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certifications. Similar to other CompTIA exams, the exam consists of both multiple choice and performance based questions. The exam I took had a total of 103 questions with 5 of those questions being performance based. The total test time allotted for the beta exam was 165 minutes. CompTIA plans to release the final exam in 1Q2017 so the makeup could change for the final exam.

The performance based questions rely on the test taker's ability to analyze snippets of log files and then using that information from the log files to determine what is occurring within the network or with an external source. You could be faced with questions to review a scan and answer the questions (e.g. determine false positives and scan type), review network traffic/workstation/server logs to determine the host containing malware and the infected process running. These are more detailed than the CompTIA Security+ performance based questions so prepare yourself and budget your time. The only nit I had with these questions is the floating dialog box with the simulation description. It can be resized but it was getting in the way of the log file analysis.

The multiple choice questions have the typical CompTIA wording flavor. The questions are to the point but remember to look for the specific keywords that are essential to answering the multiple choice question with the best answer. The beta multiple choice questions included but limited to Incident Response Management, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), choose the correct open source tool invocation to perform a task, identify what has occurred based on a snippet of network traffic. The tools in the exam and log files are based on common open source software tools available to security analysts. CompTIA's examples from the beta exam website are:

I do not know if this will be identified in the DoD 8570 Approved Certification list but it will be in CompTIA's best interest if it is ultimately included. My guess is, if it is included, it will fall in with the CND-SP certifications instead of IAT, IAM, and IASAE.

The exam is intended for someone with a couple of years of cyber analyst experience with hands on tool experience. I found the beta exam to be refreshing and if the final is similar to the beta exam then I believe that CompTIA will have a great exam for Cyber Security Analysts. Based on the beta exam, I recommend keeping eyes open for the release of the final exam in 1Q2017 and taking a look at it.

Updated December 7, 2016: I was notified today by CompTIA that I passed the Cybersecurity Analyst+ (CSA+) certification exam. CompTIA's website states that the exam will be available to the general public on February 15, 2017. Good luck with the new exam.Erik Russellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726475792696664169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5909888655243873622.post-34228806554685737482016-06-25T22:29:00.001-04:002017-07-24T21:19:06.997-04:00HOA Activity - Meet Your NeighborHistorically, our Home Owners Association has not sponsored events for the residents of our community. Our Board of Directors, of which I am serving as president, has changed over in recent years and is becoming much more active. Because this was our first event of this type. we went small. Our offering was grilled hot dogs, chips, cookies, water, and juice. As an incentive, we also held a drawing for all of the residents who attended for two $25 gift certificates to a local restaurant. We purchased food for 64 residents for under $100 plus $50 for the door prizes. For a little under $150 we had a great afternoon and met with some wonderful people.

I am looking forward to many more of these community events.Erik Russellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726475792696664169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5909888655243873622.post-80511601240733429252016-06-25T22:11:00.001-04:002016-06-25T22:11:31.195-04:00First Response Bluetooth enabled pregnancy test

After a while it may develop an odor that even vinegar or other concoctions will not handle. Here I'll show how easy it is to refresh the area for many more years of use.

First, you have the existing patch. If you are looking to create one for the first time take a look at my post on How-to Create a Dog Patch (Dog Pee Patch).

On top of the rocks and under the pea gravel I had laid mesh screen so begin by using a shovel to pull back the pea gravel around the edges exposing the mesh. The mesh can be pulled up to bring the gravel into a pile that is easier to shovel.

You will want to remove the old pea gravel and you have two options, clean and reuse or dispose of and use new gravel. For this refresh I use all new pea gravel. After removing the pea gravel and mesh you end up with the original base. Other than cleaning with vinegar or something to help with any odor the base stays untouched.
It all appeared in great shape so I covered it back up. and moved onto the deodorizing of the patch.

In my dog patch, the odor was mainly coming from the pea gravel in the areas of the darker black spots. I cleaned this area (I opted for a light solution of bleach and water). I poured the solution over the rocks and then let it air dry in the sun while I did some weeding elsewhere. After a hour or so I then sprayed the rocks down with a hose to wash out any solution and excess dirt and voila a clean patch!
For the size of this patch, I needed at least 3 bags of pea gravel from Home Depot. I initially tried 2 bags but it really didn't cover all of the mesh and left some blank spots.

And there we have it, the refreshed and no odor patch. The dogs immediately took to it so it meets their standards.

It it easy and ignoring the wait time for it to dry, it took about a 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. It is really simple and extends the life of the patch with little expense and effort.
For this I fired up my Argent Data Systems Tracker2 and Kenwood TM-V71A. For the entire drive, I ran the Kenwood at 10W and transmitted on the Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) frequency of 144.390 MHz as K8ESR-9. The outcome was much improved over past trips do to better coverage by digis and I-Gates. In previous trips, I could drive an hour and a half without a packet being received at an I-Gate. As can be seen in the aprs.fi plot, this is no longer the case. I'd like to thank the amateur radio community for improving the coverage by adding digis along this heavily traveled route.
As a side finding, I discovered that I do need to look at my setup. Unless I unknowingly have a car-airplane hybrid then I think there could be an issue with the GPS. At least one transmitted packet shows the speed to be 219 MPH. The elevation at that point checks out but the speed... uhmmmmm, suspect.
As always, your results may vary depending on radio and antenna setup but when traveling on this part of the turnpike you'll have decent coverage for most of the drive. Happy travels!
In 2015 I still own the VX-8GR and I decided to use it for my Saturday trip. My primary HT is a Kenwood TH-F6A and to keeps things simple I decided to make my APRS backpack portable. This was a simple build consisting of a backpack, a 3 foot extension cable SMA male to BNC male, BNC female to SMA female adaptor, and tie wraps.

I attached the stock antenna to the backpack and ran the extension cable to the side pocket. A nice quick "build" so to speak. With all of the APRS traffic at Hamvention I was not entirely sure how well this was going to work. I set the HT to transmit at 3 minute intervals and let it go for the day. From 9 AM until about 2 PM 39 packets were picked up and available to map in APRS-IS.
Yet again, I am impressed with how well this little radio performs in a crowded environment. The GPS has sufficient sensitivity to provide some position packets from within Hara Arena. As you can see, we did a decent job making our way through the flea market on Saturday.

So, if you are looking for a good HT with great APRS battery performance (blows the Kenwood TH-D72A away on battery life) I still highly recommend the VX-8GR. These radios are no longer in production so you'd have to pick it up on Ebay or in a flea market. If you do buy one I don't think you will be disappointed.
This year marked another great year at Hamvention 2015. Due to the traveling I am usually only able to make one day out of the three day event in Dayton Ohio. As I noted in my past post Hamvention 2015 - Trip to Ohio I was lucky again this year to be able to travel to Dayton with my father, K8RSU. Hara Arena is a great venue for Hamvention so hopefully Hara can resolve its financial problems and continue to be around.

As always, there was a lot of walking involved especially out in the flea market. With the exception of some tie wraps and heat shrink, I didn't find much this year to purchase outside. I did however, capture some different pictures from the Flea Market.

The pneumatic line launcher kit. You could purchase N8PRK's kit for $199.00 (minus the wheels). It has a max PSI of 80 so it probably doesn't have a lot of other uses but this should would be a fun "toy" to own.
To be honest, I lived in Dayton for 6 years and attended Hamvention three of the years so those where easy trips. Living in Dayton, Hamvention spoiled me on hamfests. Take Hara Arena and pack in equipment manufacturers, retailers, groups, demonstrations, exams, 25,000 (give or take) attendees and you have one large group of great people and equipment - and that doesn't include the flea market in Hara's parking lot! If you look at the map, you can see that it is an extensive layout. After moving away from Dayton I have made an effort to make it back on as many occasions as possible. This year I am lucky to be able to attend again with my father and so far the trip has started out fairly routine. Leave the house in Maryland between 4AM and 5AM, drive 435 miles, and suffer through Ohio Turnpike construction. Unfortunately, I tried to make it to Ohio in time for the 9 AM trivia net outside of Cleveland, Ohio but by the time I made it in range of the repeater the net was about over. Maybe next year.

On my drive I always enjoy stopping at the Somerset Plaza on the PA Turnpike. Other than it is a good point to take a break, I like spending a few minutes watching the wind generators. For some reason I just find these peaceful to watch. From the plaza you can see a few of them and they have a description of the wind power generation.
Dropbox is an excellent cloud storage service and it is available on all popular platforms. The catch is that new users only receive 2 GB of storage. Compared to other cloud services, this is low side for storage. The positive side is that Dropbox pays users with bonus space to perform certain activities such as reading the Get Started Guide, using the app to upload photos, and linking to Mailbox and social media accounts. After performing those activities and receiving 1GB after OnCloud was purchased by Dropbox I had 7.88 GB of space. Not bad, but I needed a bit more room for growth. My remaining untapped bonus area was referrals. For every friend that is referred and installs the app you will receive 500 MB in additional space up to 16 GB. To max out at 16 GB you need 32 friends who A) are not users of Dropbox and B) will sign up and install the desktop app. I'd likely need many more than 32 friends to achieve this goal. What to do....

AdWords Ad Keywords for Dropbox Referrals

I found a Life Hacker article Use Google Adwords to Quickly Max Out Your Dropbox Referrals from 2011 and I was curious if it still applied in 2015. Using the instructions from the Life Hacker article I decided to try to replicate the results. I opened a Google AdWords account and set the keywords up similar to those in the article.

As in the article, I maxed out the Cost-Per-Click (CPC) at $0.05 which maximize the number of ads over the day without quickly killing the daily budget. I did deviate and set the max daily budget to $13.00 instead of $20.00 as used in the article.

Same as in the article, the keyword that drew the most impressions and clicks was "Dropbox".

AdWords Dropbox Campaign

To achieve the same results of having 32 people sign up for Dropbox, I needed 4.7 times the number of clicks but only half of the impressions. The Click-Through-Rate (CTR) was higher than in the article and that resulted in a 4 times greater cost compared to 2011.

Dropbox Referral Results

Out of 1,029 add clicks I had 77 first time users sign up for Dropbox accounts with only 37 of the 77 users installing the client. To max out the referral bonus space, it only required 32 users to install the client so the campaign brought in 5 additional users without a bonus. The proof, with email addresses hidden, shows that referrals using the link in the ad were received.

Replicating the Google AdWords campaign was successful but it did cost 4 times more than in 2011. The goal of 32 signups with desktop installation was achieved in 2.5 days. Dropbox does have more subscribers than in 2011 and my theory is that it took more to reach people who do not currently use Dropbox and are not tied to a different cloud storage service. Each user that signs up using the referral link also receives a 500 MB bonus so their accounts all started out at 2.5 GB instead of 2.0 GB. If you are willing to pay $40 for 16GB of Dropbox storage then this avenue may be for you. I now have plenty of space on Dropbox and I don't need to pay $99 a year for 1 terabyte of Dropbox space which is much more than I require.

If you try this out for yourself, leave a comment and let us know how it worked for you.

Target carries a double edge safety razor with a branding of Van Der Hagen. Up to this point, the only methods that I have found for purchasing a safety razor are through one of the on-line speciality stores or Amazon. This is the first safety razor that I have encountered that any person can easily purchase. The razor costs $19.99 at Target so I decided to purchase one for a test drive and review.

As some background the razors that I own are:

1957 Flare Tip Super Speed

1960 Fatboy
Edwin Jagger DE89
Feather AS-D2

The Van Der Hagen is a twist-to-open (TTO) razor allowing for easy blade replacement. I was not sure what to expect from a $19 razor but the TTO works flawlessly. It is easy to use; however, when it is closed the end cap at the bottom of the TTO mechanism rattles. This doesn't affect the shave but I'd prefer to not hear a rattle with every shave stroke.
The look, as evident in the pictures, is similar to the Gillette Flare Tip Super Speed. The head of both razors when open and closed have a striking resemblance. I don't know if this is to pay homage to the great Gillette razors of yesteryear or for a different reason but either way the appearance is similar. The Van Der Hagen's handle measures at 3 inches which is slightly longer than the Super Speed's 2 and 7/8's inch handle. Both are shorter than the Edwin Jagger's 3 1/4 inch handle. The handle is in the ballpark for what I usually use so I didn't notice a difference. Also, the overall weight and balance of the razor feels fine in the hand. The head weighs less than both the Edwin Jagger and the Feather but it is on par, if not slightly lighter than the Flare Tip. The weight didn't affect my shave but it did feel a tad light in the hand.

I performed a WTG, XTG, and ATG shave using a Feather blade and I didn't not notice any irritation; however, the shave is not all that aggressive. I did not have as close of a shave as I get from the Edwin Jagger. Comparing the shave to my commercially available razors, the Van Der Hagen is less aggressive than the Edwin Jagger, and more aggressive than the Feather (which is known as a mild razor).

I'm glad to have tried this razor and it can compete with other DE razors.
Strengths:

Available to anyone through Target brick and mortar stores

Low price ($19.99)

Good starter razor - mild to Medium aggressiveness shave

Weaknesses:

Rattle from the handle when shaving

Weight is on the light side

Overall, I feel that this razor falls into the category of a starting razor and would benefit someone new into the world of DE wet shaving. Instead of purchasing a $35-$60 razor off Amazon someone new to shaving could begin with tis razor. Once he (or she) gets used to DE shaving they can upgrade continue with this razor or upgrade to a more aggressive razor. Personally, I plan to hold on to this razor. For me this would make a great travel razor. I get a good shave, it doesn't weight a lot, and if I were to forget it at a hotel it I'd be out $19 and could always pickup another.

I do want to thank Target for offering a low cost DE razor in their stores as DE shaving is more cost effective than disposables and is easier on the environment.

Today my son and I had the opportunity to fly in a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor aircraft. The aircraft that came to the Frederick Municipal Airport was from the Kalamazoo Air Zoo.
My son and I went to the airport to look at the aircraft and ended up paying for two seats on the aircraft. The cost for an adult is $75 and for children under 17 it is $50. It is free to fly with a child under 2 years of age. Yes, it is pricy, but how often do you get this opportunity to share this type of experience with your children.
in the aircraft for a very short time before the engines started and we were on our way. Keep in mind that when they start the engines there is a guy outside of the aircraft with a fire extinguisher. Practical, but not something I generally see with modern aircraft. Alas, it was not needed!

After the short taxi to runway 23 up into the air we went. The total time for taxing, takeoff, flight, landing, and taxing is about 20 minutes. The cruising speed is 90 mph which in modern terms may seem slow but this was fast for 1929. For an added enjoyment it just so happens that the flight path took us over our house. This added just one more fine touch to the experience. We landed and made it back to the loading / unloading area, deplaned, and took some pictures.
If you are interested in either seeing the plane and its history or taking a ride please take a look at the website www.flytheford.org/ for the upcoming tour locations and dates. If you are looking for possibly a once in a lifetime activity for the family or just yourself then the EAA tour is something it check out. It will be visiting the following cities through the middle of November 2013 (but please check the website in case there are changes):
Manassas, VA
Wichita, KS
Newton, KS
Oklahoma City, OK
Myrtle Beach, SC
Fort Worth, TX
Monroe, NC
Columbia, SC
St. Simons Island, GA
Georgetown, TX
Savannah, GA
Jacksonville, FL

Note to self: As I learned after the flight I had asked my 3 year old son "Do you want to go for a ride?" And of course he said yes. At the age of 3 he has logged a number of hours flying commercial; however, I should have asked if he wanted to go fly. I think he took "ride" to mean driving around the airport. After we landed he said he didn't understand why we left the ground. I laughed to myself and this experience and his comment is one that I won't soon forget.
Hamvention in 2013. I have used the APRS capabilities a few times on his HT but I was not sure how it would function while sailing. I forgot the battery charger but as I learned with this experiment that wasn't an issue.

Radio setup:
Call sign: k8esr-8
Single frequency receive
Transmit an APRS packet every 10 minutes
Battery : FNB-102LI (extended battery)
Transmit power: 5 watts

Over the course of the week I ran the radio for 10 hours:
Monday: 1 hour
Tuesday: 2 hours
Wednesday: 3.5 hours
Thursday: 1.5 hours
Friday: 2.5 hours

I was very impressed with how well the radio worked while sailing. After the week of use I was only down to half of the bars of battery remaining. To get an idea of the battery usage running APRS I chose to not use the radio for voice communications.
After sailing on Wednesday I pulled up the data on aprs.fi and took a screen shot. In areas of the bay there were fewer points plotted but packets in other area were still well received. That said, the performance is not totally based on the transmitter but also on the location and height of the receiving digipeter or I-gate.

Overall I was very happy with the performance of the HT considering it is transmitting at 5 watts. The antenna was attached to the radio but had I mounted the antenna higher I probably would have had even better results. The VX-8GR has been discontinued by Yaesu but the performance characteristics may be similar on the other Yaesu radios like the FT1DR.Erik Russellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726475792696664169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5909888655243873622.post-79763252032233844522013-08-23T23:54:00.000-04:002013-08-24T12:44:02.673-04:00Chesapeake Bay Sailing Charter - The Final DayOur final day on the Chesapeake Bay charter was not rushed and we spent the morning at the Rock Hall Landing Marina. To amuse the kids we lunched the dinghy from the back of the boat and gave them a water tour around the marina. The act of bringing the dinghy back onto the boat took 4 guys. During the checkout process they neglected one critical piece of information - how to telescope the boom to lift the dinghy. This is one of those situations best left to pictures but unfortunately I have none. We will leave it at this: it was more difficult than it should have been and required 4 guys again to get it back on the boat.

After giving the kids a break on land we departed at 11:30 AM to
return to the marina in Back Creek. A cold front was moving through so we had 10 kt winds with waves of 1.5 to 2 feet. At this point we motor sailed with just the jib which gave us an extra knot of speed. At this time I fell asleep with my youngest child (I hear that there are good pictures of us sleeping) so we will just fast forward...
We made it back to the marina, waited in line a bit for fuel /
pump out, and proceeded back to the slip for Dream Cat. We transferred our belongings to our cars, said our goodbyes, and drove back to reality.

While I didn't exactly like the configuration of parts of the boat it was the first we have chartered with an electric winch to raise the mainsail (a plus!). The winch was also very helpful to have for raising the dingy onto the boat.
Everything considered it was a great charter and we had a lot of fun and stories to reminisce on our next charter.
We spent the morning on land to give the kids some non boating playtime. In the morning there was some decent wind so we decided to head out of the marina to do some sailing. Poof, there went the wind. After putting the sails up we achieved a whopping 1 to 2 kts of speed. We were able to get some slow sailing in today but after the wind decreased to the point that we were making half a knot of speed we dropped the sails. The decision was also prompted by the storm building on the west side of the bay. Back to the marina!

The main adventure of the afternoon was many of us being
caught by a rapidly building and fast approaching storm. My child and I were trapped in on the main street of the town. After trying to stay dry and failing next to someone's garbage cans I made the run to the other side in hopes for a dryer location. After about 30 minutes of standing on a porch we headed back to the boat only to find that we were not the only members of our crew trapped by the storm.

It wouldn't follow the tone of the these posts if I failed to say that our sewage tanks were full from the start - Oh yeah, stinky. The current theory is that the cleaning crew may have filled the sewage tanks with water thinking it was the fresh water tank. I do wonder what they put in our fresh water tanks.

Tomorrow is our last day on the bay. Hopefully we will find some wind and no other issues.
We called the charter company and they sent over Mr. Mechanic to see what was up with the engine. He determined that the starter's relay was bad. To get us moving on our charter due got us going by shorting the starter relay with a wrench. We would get the starter replaced in Rock Hall.
Pull up anchor and off we go. Next stop, Rock Hall! Um, no...
We motored out the Severn River and we almost made it to the bay bridge when the port engine cut out. The engine compartment was opened only to discover a burning smell and a very small fire. Fire extinguishers to the rescue! First a call to the charter company and then a call to a water towing service (think AAA but on water).

Let's take an inventory - the starboard engine won't restart if stopped and the port engine was dead.

We aimed for our port of origin and the towing service met us and helped to get us back into our slip.
Every so often we do sailing charters with friends of ours. We have sailed in the British Virgin Islands, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Adriatic off the coast of Croatia, and of course in the Chesapeake Bay.

On Monday started off on our next bare boat charter in the Chesapeake Bay. Our general plan was to sail / motor from the Severn River to Rock Hall, Maryland. We took possession of our charter the sailing vessel Lux. She was a beautiful 40' catamaran and in this case we learned that beauty was only skin deep. After stowing our possessions and loading our provisions we set sail. Well, actually there was little to no wind so we motored up the Severn River to Little Round Bay and anchored there for the night. We had a great meal of grilled burgers and hotdogs.
I had such great success with my Raspberry PI NAS that I decided to take a stab at running an APRS application with maps on a Raspberry PI. After searching the web I was not surprised to find that others have done something similar. Because I dedicated my original Raspberry PI as a NAS I obtained a second Raspberry PI model B along with some accessories from Adafruit Industries. Adafruit tests the accessories with the Raspberry PI so it eliminates the hunting for compatible accessories.
The setup is fairly straight forward for Xastir on the Raspberry PI. Depending on what your intent is for using it the filter from the APRS database may need to be updated. I am using a filter of m/25 to retrieve stations within 25 miles of my location.

A monitor could be added to the Raspberry PI via HDMI or the AV video output but while one of the 3.5" or 4.3" displays may sound good the resolution is too low to be able to fully use the Xastir. It can be done and the map with the stations can be viewed but the pop-up boxes for making changes are mostly larger than the small screen's real estate and the dialog boxes will be off the screen.

As always YMMV but for a small, low cost, always on APRS device the Raspberry PI fills the need.

I bought a Raspberry PI model B along with some accessories from Adafruit Industries. Adafruit tests the accessories with the Raspberry PI so it eliminates the hunting for compatible accessories.
My intent for the NAS was to create a low cost / low power device to store a backup of digital pictures. My setup is:

After combing through all of the information out on the web I first formatted the two USB drives as NTFS. This was so the drives could be easily plugged into a Windows (or Mac) should the Raspberry PI fail. After some initial tests I was not thrilled with the throughput writing to the USB drive. I did notice that the ntfs-3g driver was CPU intensive (~40%). After reformatting the USB drive as ext3 I reran the test at 900 MHz and was pleasantly surprised at the write time performance increase.

RPI w/ NTFS @ 900 MHz - 2.35 MB/s (18.8 Mb/s)

RPI w/ NTFS @ 900 MHz - 2.63 MB/s (21.04 Mb/s)

RPI w/ ext3 @ 900 MHz - 6.26 MB/s (50.08 Mb/s)

Due to the limitations of the USB bus on the Raspberry PI you will not see anything near the theoritical maximum throughput but I was more than happy to achieve 6.26 MB/s (50.08 Mb/s) throughput writing to the USB drive.

A cronjob can be used to rsync the contents of the first USB drive to the second drive (instructions in Setting up the USB drives and Samba). The second frive provides some added reliability for the data storage. You could also use a third USB drive and manually mount it, rsync, un0mount and store the drive in off-site or on-site fire / water safe storage.

To move the files from a Windows machine to the RPI NAS rsync for Windows can be used. Mac has rsync packaged with OSX which will make easier to copy data to the PI without the need for a third party application.

As always YMMV but for a small, low cost, low power consumption NAS the Raspberry PI with two USB drives suits my backup needs.
